File Naming Conventions
A:\BRIEFER.FM file name
Macintosh computers permit file names up to 31 characters long, but Windows allows only 8 characters, followed by a period and up to a three letter extension.B
FileMaker Pro files end with the .FM extension. Follow the Windows rules when you begin developing your databases, so your scripts and lookups will work properly on both platforms.
In MS-DOS and Windows, th
th thS and Windows, th
e file name must start with a letter or number. It may not contain certain punctuation: space, period (.), quote mark ("), slash (/), backslash (\), brackets([ ]), colon (:), semicolon (;), vertical bar (|), eqD
ual sign (=), or comma (,).
Organizing your files
If you use many files together, keep them in the same folder. The folder
or subdirectory
name should also follow MS-DOS conventions. This will allow FileE>Maker Pro for Macintosh and Windows to find them more easily.

Font Substitution
When fonts you use to view the file are different from the ones used to create the file, you
ll have problems with word wrap, placement, and font substitutions. The best solution is to use fe file, you
ll have problems with word wrap, placement, and font substitutions. The best solution is to use f
onts with identical names, styles, and metrics on both platforms.
But what happens if you don
t have matching fonts on both platforms? When FileMaker Pro for Windows discovers the fonts currently available arC
e different from those used to create the file, it relies on the [FontSubstitutes] section of the WIN.INI file to find a similar replacement. Here
s a sample of that section.
[FontSubstitutes]
Helv=MS Sans Se
Tms Rmn=MS Serif
Times=Times New Roman
Helvetica=Arial
Monaco=Courier New
You can edit this section to include more substitutions. If there is no match and no substitute is defined, FileMaker changes the EZfont to Arial (note that Arial is substituted for Palatino in the example at the right).

Font Styles
The outline and shadow styles are almost a Macintosh trademark
and Windows doesn
t offer them. Don
t rely on them for your template. If you want a shadowed effect for titles or headings, here
how you can simulate the look.
ll position two copies of the text block so it appears the foremost copy is casting a shadow against your layout:
1. Add the text to your layout.
2. Set its text color to a
shade of gray.
3. Turn on the grid if it isn
t already active.
4. Duplicate the text object.
5. Set the color to black.
6. Move the duplicate back over the original.
7. Tap the up-cursor key once, then the righD
t-cursor key once. (You can vary the offset to achieve whatever shadow effect you prefer.)
8. Check on both platforms to be sure the shadow effect appears as you intended.
The following styles were created on
the Macintosh:
This is outline text, Helvetica 12 pt.
This is shadowed text, Helvetica 12 pt.
This is Helvetica (plain text)

Layout Tips
Leave Lots of Room
Even when FileMaker is able to match fonts, there can be subtle differences in character width and line spacing when fonts are substituted on another platform. Resize your text B
objects so they are a little wider than the default to prevent text from wrapping to a second line when you take a file cross-platform.

of the text labels and their associated fields
the fields and text objects should both be aligned the same. If you put a left-aligned label over a column of right-aligned numbers, for example, the report mighD
t look great on your machine if you are able to align the text block by eye. But font substitution will likely cause the text objects to shift when you change machines. If a wider font is substituted on the s
econd machine, your column heading will seem shifted to the right. If a more narrow font must be used, the text will appear too far to the left.
Avoid Mixing Text and Fields
Be careful when mixing text and fiF
elds. When designing a template, avoid placing a field in the middle of a sentence. Because the character spacing isn
t always consistent between fonts and across platforms, and because printer drivers do add
Gqitional substitution, you might have overlapping problems or layout text that doesn
t align smoothly with fields.

]E6Make the field longer to accommodate substituted fontsG
Layout Tips
Character Sets
If you
re an old hand at the Macintosh, you
re probably used to using some special characters like the Command-key cloverleaf, check marks, bullets, greater-than-equal-to symbol, not-equals, etcB
When sharing files between Macintosh and Windows platforms, use characters that exist in both character sets when available. While international characters are usually available, many of the other so-calle
high ASCII
characters do not match cross-platform. Keep in mind that special characters are handled differently across fonts.

Color Palettes
With 256 colors or more available, FileMaker will offer an 88-color palette that is virtually identical across platforms. (Close substitutes are used for the 13 colors that do not match exactly.B
Older Macintoshes and Windows machines using the standard VGA video driver will display only 16 colors. FileMaker Pro
s 16-color palette varies slightly from Macintosh to Windows, depending on the Windows c
olor scheme you are using.
If you are building your files on a 256-color computer, you might want to use colors that will map well to 16-color systems. It also helps to know which colors map to black and whD*ich map to white, for monochrome displays.

Graphics: gradients
Compare the speed of the screen redraw for the objects to the right. The graphic was created in a Macintosh graphics application, then brought into FileMaker Pro in different ways. You
notice that the object on the bottom seems to appear immediately, whereas the object on top redraws rather slowly. Why is this?
The object on the bottom was created by using a screen capture program to copy
the region surrounding the button to the Macintosh clipboard as a 72 dpi PICT. The white area surrounding the object was part of the area selected with the screen capture utility; to avoid this problem, simplyD
place a larger box behind the object you want to capture that has the same background color that will be used in your FileMaker Pro layout.
The object on top was copied as a single object to the Macintosh c
lipboard from the graphics application, then pasted into FileMaker Pro. In addition to redrawing slowly, there is some quality degradation when brought over to the Windows platform.

Printing
Scripts that include Page Setup/Print Setup and Print are not 100% compatible cross-platform. Though it may seem that the two types of machines should be able to understand these commands, especiallyB
if you
re printing to the same printer, this is not the case.
The print steps in ScriptMaker
rely upon the current printer driver in order to find out what paper sizes are available, orientation, etc. Even
if Macintoshes and PC
s are connected to the same printer, the divers themselves are significantly different
so FileMaker Pro is unable to restore page setup and print options cross-platform.
To work around thD
is, you have two options:
1. Create separate scripts for Macintosh and Windows. In order for this to work properly, you must create the Macintosh script on the Mac and create the Windows script on the PC.
En2. Do not select Perform Without Dialog. This will allow you to change the setup options before you print.

Networks and File Sharing
FileMaker Pro 2.1 files can be shared on a network.
Both Macintoshes and PC's can open and use the same FileMaker Pro 2.1 files using either Novell
s IPX/SPX protocols or AppleTalk
. Refer to your installation guide for more information.
NetBIOS file sharing exists on PC
s only, as NetBIOS is not a cross-platform protocol.
There are numerous TechInfo articles that cover network confiC:guration issues and common problems with various networks.

File Exchange via Floppy Disks
In addition to copying files via a network, you can transfer files via high-density floppy disks. After the files are copied to diskette, the FileMaker Pro 2.0 (or later) files aB
re fully usable on the other computer without conversion. The important distinction between FileMaker Pro and other applications is that there is no file conversion necessary, as the file format is the same fo
r both Macintosh and PC. To actually get the file onto a floppy disk, however, requires file transfer, since the two machines format their diskettes differently.
To transfer files with floppy disks, you will D
need high-density disk drives in both the Macintosh and PC computers.
There are a variety of products on the market that enable one type of computer to read and write to a floppy disk formatted for another typ
e of computer. Apple File Exchange is an affordable solution, as it ships with the Macintosh system software. AFE is not very convenient, however, if you often transfer files.
DataViz, Pacific MicroelectronF
ics, Insignia Solutions, Dayna Communications, Traveling Software, and Software Architects offer products that will help you get your FileMaker Pro (and other) files from here to there. Contact your local softG"ware dealer for more information.

QuickTime Movies
To use a Macintosh QuickTime movie with FileMaker Pro for Windows, you must first use Movie Converter on the Macintosh to save the movie in a self-contained format playable on non-Apple comput
ers. Movie Converter is included with the QuickTime Starter's Kit for Apple Macintoshes from Apple Computer, Inc.
To do this:
1. On the Macintosh, start Movie Converter.
2. Open the QuickTime movie you wanC
t to convert.
3. Choose Save As from the File menu.
4. In the Save As dialog box, give the converted movie a Windows-standard name. The name can be up to eight characters plus the .MOV extension.
5. Click M
ake movie self-contained.
6. Click Make playable on non-Apple computers.
The first time you play a movie from the other platform (that is, a Macintosh movie on Windows or a Windows movie on the Macintosh), FiE
leMaker Pro prompts you for the location of the movie. Keep the files in a common directory and avoid choosing the wrong file
this could lead to unexpected results, especially in a cross-platform, networked siF tuation.
